How to Open an Etsy Shop

Opening an Etsy shop costs nothing upfront, but the platform has specific rules about what can be sold and how. Knowing the rules upfront prevents the dreaded "shop suspended" email later.

Can you sell here?

Etsy is restricted to handmade, vintage (20+ years old), and craft supplies. Print-on-demand and small-scale dropshipping are allowed only when you genuinely designed the item and disclose any production partners. Mass-produced resold goods are not allowed and get shops shut down.

Open the shop

From etsy.com/sell, click Open your Etsy shop. Choose shop language, country, and currency carefully — language and country are hard to change later. Pick a shop name (4-20 characters, letters and numbers only).

Your first listings

Etsy asks for at least one listing before you can publish. Use 10 high-quality photos: 1 hero, 1 scale shot, 1 detail, plus lifestyle and packaging shots. Write 5+ paragraphs in the description covering materials, size, customisation, processing time, and shipping. Fill all 13 tag slots with specific phrases buyers actually search.

Etsy fees

You pay $0.20 to list each item (valid 4 months), 6.5% transaction fee on sale + shipping, and Etsy Payments processing fees that vary by country. Optional advertising and offsite ad fees apply if you opt in.

Stay compliant

Read Etsy's Handmade Policy, Prohibited Items list, and Intellectual Property policies. Common reasons new shops get suspended: selling unlicensed fan art, dropshipping without disclosure, or sharing accounts with another seller.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to make a first sale on Etsy?

Anywhere from days to months. Strong photos, niche keywords, and active social media promotion accelerate the timeline more than anything else.

Do I need a business license to sell on Etsy?

Depends on your country and revenue. Most casual sellers do not, but tax registration is your responsibility once you cross local thresholds.
