How to Shop on Etsy: A Buyer's Guide
Etsy works differently from Amazon or eBay — every shop is an independent maker or curator, and turnaround, communication, and return policies vary by shop. Understanding this changes how you should shop.
Find items you will love
Use the search bar with descriptive terms (material, style, occasion) rather than generic ones. Filter by Star Seller, customer reviews, and shipping origin. Favorite items as you browse — they save into Lists you can revisit.
Understand the shop
Each shop has a Policies section covering processing time, shipping, customisation, and returns. Read it before buying anything personalised — many made-to-order items are non-returnable.
Messaging the seller
For custom requests, use the Contact shop owner link before ordering. Once an order is placed, replies usually take a business day or two.
Etsy Purchase Protection
Most qualifying Etsy purchases are covered by Etsy Purchase Protection: if your order does not arrive, arrives damaged, or is significantly not as described, Etsy refunds you. File the request through Your account → Purchases and reviews.
Frequently asked questions
Do Etsy items have return policies?
Each shop sets its own. Etsy enforces a minimum baseline through Purchase Protection but does not require sellers to accept returns for buyer's remorse.
Can I trust an Etsy shop with few reviews?
A small review count is normal for new shops. Look at the photo quality, listing detail, and whether the seller responds quickly to messages.
