How to Log In to Amazon (and Fix Common Login Problems)
Logging into Amazon is straightforward when everything works — but the moment a code does not arrive or your password is rejected, the recovery flow can feel opaque. This guide covers the normal path and the three or four detours people most often run into.
Sign in on desktop
Click Account & Lists at the top right of any Amazon page. Enter the email address, mobile phone number, or Amazon username tied to your account, then click Continue. Amazon will check whether that identifier exists before asking for a password — that is why the password field appears on a separate screen.
Type your password and click Sign-In. Check Keep me signed in only on devices you personally control; on shared computers, leave it unchecked.
Sign in on the app
Open the Amazon Shopping app. Tap the menu icon (three lines) on Android or the person icon on iPhone, then Sign in. You can sign in with email, phone, or — if you have used the app before — a one-tap fingerprint or Face ID prompt.
If you also use Alexa, you can keep that signed in to the same Amazon account so purchase history and reorder commands work across devices.
Two-step verification
If you have enabled 2SV, Amazon prompts for a six-digit code after the password. Sources, in order of how reliable they are:
- An authenticator app (Google Authenticator, 1Password, Authy) — instant, works offline.
- SMS to your registered number — arrives in seconds normally, slower when roaming.
- Voice call — fallback if SMS is blocked.
Tick Do not require codes on this browser only on your own machine. Lost access to your 2SV method? Use the Account recovery link; Amazon will ask for ID and process the unlock in 24-48 hours.
Fixing login errors
"There was a problem with your request." Usually a too-many-attempts soft lock. Wait 15 minutes, clear cookies for amazon.com, and try again.
"Your password is incorrect" on a password you are sure of. Caps lock, a leading space pasted from a password manager, or a regional keyboard issue (curly vs straight quote) are the usual causes. Use Show password next to the field to confirm.
"We could not verify it is you" after entering a correct password. This is Amazon's anti-fraud check on a login from a new device or country. Approve the prompt sent to your registered email, then sign in again.
